On December 1, 2009, President Barack Obama gives a speech at U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York about his strategy on Afghanistan. Obama spoke about our effort in Afghanistan, our nature of our commitment there, our interest, and the strategy that will pursue to bring this war to a successful conclusion. To bring this war to an end Obama will send an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan. Obama talked about al Qaeda also. He explains on how al Qaeda was scattered and many of its operatives were killed by our troops after they refused to turn over Osama bin Laden. The President also made a comment about removing our combat brigades from Iraq by the end of next summer, and all of our troops by the end of 2011. My opinion about Obama’s speech is pretty simple. First, I agree that we should send more troops to Afghanistan. Second, we should set a date in which all our troops should come home. Finally, we should focus more on our country and our economy. The reason why I agree that we should send more troops is because for the past eight years we have been wasting money and time not bringing this war to an end. President Obama mention that by not having the additional 30,000 troops in Afghanistan will result in a slow deterioration of conditions there and it would ultimately prove more costly and prolong our stay in Afghanistan. With that said all we really want as Americans is to end the war, and if by sending more troops it will speed up the process then we should do so that way we can focus our time on rebuilding our economy here at home and save all that money that it’s costing us on this war.
I believe we should set a date in which this war should be over. The reason why we should set a date is because it creates pressure to get the job done on time. Also, by having a time limit we give our troops hope that they will return. President Obama also mentioned that the absence of a time frame for transition would deny us any sense of urgency in working with the Afghan government and that it must be clear that Afghans will have to take responsibility for their security. Overall, I agree with Obama because if we set a time limit we apply pressure on the Afghans to unite and take responsibility for their own country.
Instead of focusing on war we should focus on our own country and economy. The reason why I believe that is because it’s hurting the American economy. The United States' economy has been progressively getting worse and worse since the beginning of this war and the American people are suffering. Practically everything has risen in cost, most noticeably gas prices, and many people are having trouble keeping up. In conclusion, sending more troops will end war faster, setting a timeline will encourage Afghans to work harder to bring peace to their country, and most importantly it is not fair that American people are being penalized for a war that many do not even believe in anymore. Many did support the war in the beginning, but now it has lost very much of its support and America is supposed to be for the people by the people. The government should listen to the people.
